GCSE Physics

Struggling with GCSE Physics equations? Lumini sees your calculations, checks your unit conversions, and teaches you the 23 equations you must memorise for the exam.

How Lumini helps with GCSE Physics

You're staring at a GCSE Physics calculation question on your Mac — probably a 5-mark question about calculating the force needed to accelerate a car. You've written F = ma but you're not sure if you used the right mass (did you convert tonnes to kg?) or if your final answer has the right units.

Lumini sees your working on screen — the equation, the numbers you substituted, and your final answer. Hold Ctrl+Option and ask "Check my calculation — is everything correct?" Lumini examines each step: "Your equation is correct — F = ma. Your substitution is correct — 1200 kg × 3.5 m/s². But your unit: you wrote 4200 J. Force is measured in newtons, not joules. Joules measure energy or work. The correct answer is 4200 N. The examiner will deduct a mark for the wrong unit even though the number is right. I'm pointing at your unit — that's where the mark is lost."

The 23 equations

GCSE Physics requires you to memorise 23 equations (for AQA) or recall them from a formula sheet (for Edexcel). Lumini helps you know which is which: "This question doesn't provide the formula — that means it's one you must memorise. The equation linking energy transferred, power, and time is E = Pt. You wrote E = P/t, which would give you energy over time SQUARED. I'm pointing at your equation — check whether it's multiplication or division."

For multi-step calculations: "This question requires two equations. First, calculate the kinetic energy using ½mv². Then use the work done equation (W = Fs) to find the braking distance. You did the first step correctly — the kinetic energy is 450,000 J. But for the second step, you need to rearrange W = Fs to s = W/F. You wrote F × W instead of W/F. I'm pointing at where the rearrangement error occurred."

Required practicals

The GCSE Physics required practicals are heavily examined. Lumini helps with the specifics: "The question is about the specific heat capacity practical. You need to mention: use an insulation layer around the metal block, stir the water continuously, and read the thermometer at eye level to avoid parallax error. These control measures are on the mark scheme. You mentioned insulation but forgot stirring — that's one mark lost."

Example questions to ask Lumini

  • "Is my equation correct — multiplication or division?"
  • "Did I convert my units correctly?"
  • "What's the next equation I need for this multi-step problem?"
  • "Is my answer in the right units?"
  • "What control variables do I need to mention for this practical?"

How Lumini automates your Physics revision

Say "Create a note with the 23 equations and whether they're given or need memorising." Say "Remind me to do Paper 1 at 9am tomorrow." Say "Search the web for AQA GCSE Physics required practicals mark scheme." All on your screen.
