Mathematics

Stuck on a math problem? Lumini sees your screen and walks you through the solution step by step.

Learn math without switching tabs

You're staring at a math problem on your screen — maybe in a PDF textbook, on Khan Academy, in a Jupyter notebook, or on a problem set website. You don't understand the next step. Normally you'd open Google, search the problem type, find a YouTube video, watch someone solve a similar problem, and try to map their solution to your specific numbers. It takes minutes. It breaks your concentration. And sometimes the video solves a different variant of the problem.

With Lumini, hold Ctrl+Option and ask: "How do I solve this?" Lumini sees your exact problem — the numbers, the equation, the diagram if there is one — and walks you through the solution step by step. It doesn't just give the answer. It explains the logic so you can solve the next one yourself.

How Tutor mode works for math

Turn on Tutor mode while working through math problems. After you attempt a step and pause, Lumini checks your work. "You factored correctly, but when you set each factor equal to zero, watch the sign on the second term — it should be negative, not positive. I'm pointing at it now." This immediate, screen-specific feedback prevents you from practicing mistakes.

For multi-step problems like calculus integrals or linear algebra proofs, Tutor mode breaks the problem into chunks. After each chunk, it confirms you're on the right track or guides you back. You learn the problem-solving process, not just the answer.

What Lumini can help with

Real tutoring examples

  • **Algebra:** "I need to solve 3x² - 12x + 9 = 0." Lumini sees the equation and walks through factoring: factor out 3, find two numbers that multiply to 3 and add to -4, set each factor to zero.
  • **Calculus:** "Find the derivative of x²sin(x)." Lumini identifies this as a product rule problem, explains why, shows the steps, and gives the answer: 2x·sin(x) + x²·cos(x).
  • **Statistics:** "Is this difference statistically significant?" Lumini sees your data and output, explains p-values, and helps you interpret the results in plain English.
  • **Graph reading:** "What does this graph tell me?" Lumini sees the axes, the curve, the labels, and explains the relationship in plain language.

Lumini automates your study workflow
